HVAC Pump System: Styles, Types, and Features to Consider

HVAC Pump System

When it comes to heating or cooling your home, one of the first decisions you must make is selecting the type of HVAC pump system. This system offers an energy-efficient alternative to air conditioners and furnaces.

Different Styles of the HVAC pump system

HVAC pumps use electricity to transfer heat from one place to another, providing comfortable temperatures for your home. There are different styles of pumps, such as stacked multi-stage pumps, but the most common choice is between a base-mounted and an inline pump.

Base-Mounted HVAC Pumps

These pumps have components, such as the pump and motor, mounted on a common base. They are ready to be installed on the concrete floor and can be configured. Water enters horizontally and exits vertically from the end suction.

Inline Centrifugal Pumps

Inline pumps are mounted on the piping and are supported by the pipe. They can be horizontally styled where the motor is mounted horizontally or vertically styled with the motor above the HVAC pump. Larger inline pumps will require more support.

Main Types of the HVAC Pump System

Different types of HVAC pumps are used for heating and cooling, including split-case pumps and multi-stage stackable pumps. The most common one is the centrifugal pump. Further, centrifugal pumps can be divided into two different categories: volute and axial flow pumps.

While the volute pump takes water from the impeller and discharges it perpendicular to the pump shaft, the axial flow pump discharges the water parallel to the pump shaft. Additionally, centrifugal pumps are available in end-suction, split-case, and vertical in-line models.

Advanced Features to Look for in an HVAC Pump

Several innovations are taking place in the pump industry, improving the performance of HVAC pumps. Unlike ordinary compressors that operate at full capacity, two-speed compressors operate close to the capacity required at any particular temperature. This saves energy by reducing on/off operations and compressor wear.

In addition to two-speed heat pumps, you should also look for zone control systems that are best for larger homes. They use automatic dampers to let the pump keep different rooms at different temperatures. You can choose between variable-speed and dual-speed motors. Another feature is the scroll compressor which will help compress the refrigerant by forcing it into smaller areas.

Callaghan Pump offers various HVAC pump systems for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning. The pump range includes vertical multistage centrifugal pumps, horizontal multistage pumps, single-stage end suction pumps, and vertical in-line pumps. HVAC pump packages are also available for indoor systems and comprehensive facilities for institutional, commercial, and industrial applications.
